There are many reasons why access to finance remains low among African rural farming communities. We take an ecosystem approach to addressing these barriers while appreciating that technology provides a means (digital finance platforms) to a desired end (increased access and usage of the most appropriate financial products and services for farmer households). We work with leaders of farmer savings groups to provide bespoke financial services to the farmers on our platform.
How We Work
- We recruit trained youth (agent) who are already known and working with village groups to digitize existing saving groups.
- We train the resident youth agent on how to use the Lastmile platform to mentor savings group members on how save and borrow from their group digitally. This automatically generates records for both the group and individual members.
- For groups that have established group objectives and resolutions, our digital platform enables them have the necessary financial records to qualify for credit from formal Financial Service Providers.
To date we are working with over 270 groups mostly in the northern parts of Uganda.
